Ingredients

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

2 cups of diced apples (preferably Granny Smith for tartness)

1 medium onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup low-sodium chicken broth

1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried sage)

2 tablespoons honey

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Fresh sage leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Ingredients: Start by washing and dicing the apples, chopping the onion, and mincing the garlic. Set aside.

Sear the Chicken: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, sear the chicken breasts for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. This step enhances the flavor but can be skipped if you’re short on time.

Layer the Crockpot: Place the seared chicken breasts at the bottom of your crockpot. Top them with the chopped onions and minced garlic to create a flavorful base.

Add Apples and Seasoning: Layer the diced apples over the chicken, then sprinkle the fresh sage, cinnamon, salt, and pepper evenly over the top.

Mix the Liquid Ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together the chicken broth, honey, and apple cider vinegar. Pour this mixture over the chicken and apples in the crockpot.

Cook: Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, until the chicken is tender and fully cooked (internal temperature should reach 165°F).

Serve: Once cooked, gently shred the chicken using two forks or leave it whole as desired. Serve hot, garnished with fresh sage leaves for an aromatic touch.

Pairing Suggestions: This dish pairs wonderfully with roasted vegetables, wild rice, or a fresh side salad.
