Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, diced

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage (or a mix of both)

1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 cup sour cream

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Ziti: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the ziti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Sauté the Vegetables: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute until fragrant.

Brown the Meat: Add the ground beef or sausage to the skillet. Season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned and cooked through, about 7-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

Combine Ingredients: Stir in the marinara sauce, oregano, and basil. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes.

Mix in Cheeses: In a separate bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, sour cream, half of the mozzarella, and half of the Parmesan. Mix well until creamy.

Assemble the Ziti: In a large baking dish, layer half of the cooked ziti, followed by half of the meat sauce. Spread half of the creamy cheese mixture over the sauce. Repeat the layers with the remaining ziti, meat sauce, and cheese mixture.

Top with Cheese: Finish by sprinkling the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and slightly golden.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
