For Assembly:

2 cups cooked pasta (penne or rigatoni work well)

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

    Make the Meatballs:

      - In a large bowl, combine the ground beef/sausage, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, egg, minced garlic, salt, pepper, oregano, and red pepper flakes.

        - Mix until just combined; do not overmix.

          - Form the mixture into 1-inch meatballs and place them on a baking sheet.

            Cook the Meatballs:

              - Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until they are browned and cooked through.

                Prepare the Marinara Sauce:

                  - While the meatballs are baking, heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent (about 3-4 minutes).

                    - Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

                      - Add the crushed tomatoes, dried basil, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

                        Assemble the Casserole:

                          - In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta, baked meatballs, and marinara sauce. Stir well to combine.

                            - Transfer the mixture to a greased 9x13 inch casserole dish. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese.

                              Bake the Casserole:

                                - Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and golden.

                                  Serve:

                                    - Let the casserole sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves for a pop of color and freshness.
