Ingredients

4 slices of rustic bread (sourdough or whole-grain)

1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated

1 medium apple (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), cored and thinly sliced

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

1 tablespoon honey (optional)

1 teaspoon fresh rosemary or thyme, chopped (optional)

Pinch of salt

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: Start by spreading a thin layer of butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread. This will be the outer side that gets grilled.

Assemble the Sandwich: On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer the grated cheddar cheese generously. Then, lay down the thin apple slices over the cheese. If desired, drizzle a little honey over the apples for added sweetness and sprinkle with rosemary or thyme for a fragrant kick. Finish the assembly by topping each sandwich with the other two slices of bread, buttered side facing out.

Heat the Pan: Preheat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Once hot, place the assembled sandwiches into the skillet.

Grill the Sandwiches: Grill the sandwiches for about 3-4 minutes on one side, or until golden brown and the cheese starts to melt. Carefully flip the sandwiches and grill the other side for another 3-4 minutes.

Check for Doneness: When both sides are golden and crispy and the cheese is thoroughly melted, remove the sandwiches from the skillet. Let them sit for a minute, then slice in half diagonally.

Serve: Serve warm as a delicious snack or light meal. Enjoy your Cheddar Apple Grilled Snack Sandwich with a side of your favorite dipping sauce or even a small salad!
