Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted cold butter, cubed

1/2 cup dried cranberries (or fresh if in season)

Zest of 1 large orange

1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice added)

1 large egg

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 cup orange juice

1 egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water)

Optional: coarse sugar for sprinkling on top

Instructions

Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

Cut in the butter: Add the cubed cold butter to the dry mixture. Using a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add cranberries and zest: Gently fold in the dried cranberries and orange zest, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the flour mixture.

Combine wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, vanilla extract, and orange juice until smooth.

Make the dough: Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture. Stir gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.

Shape the scones: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. With floured hands, gently pat the dough into a circle about 1 inch thick. Cut into 8 equal wedges or use a round biscuit cutter for individual scones.

Prepare for baking: Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired for a bit of sparkle.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes or until the scones are golden brown on the edges and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and serve: Remove the scones from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes. Serve warm with butter, jam, or your favorite spread.
